Author: Lee MacRaeGolfers don’t need to become a Mr. Olympia championship
bodybuilder when we talk about being golf fit. Being golf fit
means you can swing your club with the same vigor on the 18th
hole that you showed on the first. Being golf fit means you can
swing the club with ease and still get longer shots because you
are stronger and fitter than the others in your foursome. Being
golf fit means your time on the links is much more enjoyable.
You don’t need fancy equipment or a high-priced gym membership
to become a fitter golfer. The types of exercises you can and
should focus on are simply oriented around the golf swing and
all that it entails. You can simply apply resistance via tubing,
medicine balls or even dumbbells to improve golf specific
strength. You can use simple exercises like push-ups for the
arms and chest, sit-ups for the lower back and abdominal muscles
and even simple jumping jacks to help you to increase the
strength in your torso and hips. Simple golf stretching
exercises will keep your hips flexible and add to a more fluid
swing. Simply swinging a weighted golf club several times a day
will make you a much fitter and better golfer.

Whatever form of exercise you choose, just make sure it is golf
specific. That is the most important point, making sure the
exercising you do pertains to the particular motions and
requirements of golf. For example, improving abdominal strength
is helpful in preventing injuries to your lower back, an injury
common to many golfers. Some weight routines or simply jogging
can be used to build your stamina over the full 18 holes.
Stretching exercises are an easy and effective way to stretch
muscles commonly sore and tight from golf…the chest, the
shoulders, the upper back and the rotator cuff muscles. And, of
course, being a fitter golfer means you get to play more often
while the other fella is sitting at home taking care of his sore
back!

The success of Tiger Woods has thrown a greater light on the
factor that golf fitness plays in optimizing your golf potential
and improving your game to another level. Tiger has shown the
mental determination to condition his body to be fitter than any
other golfer on the professional tour and you should strive to
follow his example to the best of your ability. Setting aside a
little time three times a week will not only benefit you on the
golf green but bring you increased enjoyment in your everyday
life.

Golf specific exercises will move any player to another level in
his or her golf game. Don’t just look for the newest club on the
market or the newest style of putter to lower your score and
better your game. Look to the simple exercises that will make
you golf fit and improve your game in the process.
